Dental Fillings

Gold and Amalgam (Silver fillings) used to be the treatment of choice for repair and restoration of broken/decayed teeth in the olden days. With today’s technology and materials evolution, tooth colored materials (resins, ceramics, polymers) have become the material of choice and patients preferred choice for treatment. These newer materials have good properties and can withstand constant cyclic oral environments and do not degrade with time.

Inlays & Onlays

These are a form of indirect restoration that is fabricated outside the mouth (in a Lab) as a single, solid piece, that fits the specific size and shape of the prepared tooth cavity. The restoration is then cemented in place onto the mouth. This is an alternative to a direct restoration (filling), made out of composite, amalgam or glass-ionomer, that is done within the mouth. Inlays and onlays are used in molars or premolars, when the tooth has experienced too much damage to support a basic filling, but not so much to necessitate a crown.

The key comparison between them is the amount and part of the tooth that they cover. An inlay will incorporate the pits and fissures of a tooth, mainly encompassing the chewing surface between the cusps. An onlay will involve one or more cusps being covered. If all cusps and the entire surface of the tooth is covered this is then known as a crown.

Crowns

Crowns also known as full coverage restorations are indirect restorations made in a lab from an esthetic ceramic like material and are use to restore an extensively decayed tooth to its proper function and appearance. They can be made in several materials like gold (noble metals, precious or semi-precious alloys), ceramic (feldspathic porcelain, zirconia or newer advanced ceramic composites). Crowns are used to attach bridges, cover dental implants or prevent a cracked tooth from worsening. They can also help restore a discoloured or stained tooth to its natural appearance.

Bridges

A bridge is a fixed dental restoration (a fixed dental prosthesis) used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth definitively to adjacent teeth or dental implants. Because they are custom-made, bridges are barely noticeable and can restore the natural contour of teeth, function esthetics and phonetics.
